Narymsky Square is a green space in the center of Novosibirsk

Narymsky Square is a small but very cozy park in the heart of Novosibirsk, a pleasant place to stroll along shady alleys, relax by the fountain, and escape the city’s hustle and bustle for a moment. Locals call it a true green oasis: it’s quiet, peaceful, and family-friendly—especially on weekdays. The square is perfect for a short stroll or a leisurely getaway with children, and it’s also a popular spot for exploring the city’s important cultural and spiritual landmarks.

Where is the park located and how is it arranged?

Narymsky Square is located in the central part of Novosibirsk, between Narymskaya, Sovetskaya, 1905 Goda, and Chelyuskintsev Streets . Krasny Prospekt and Sibirskaya metro stations are within walking distance . The city’s train station and Ploshchad Garina Mikhaylovskogo metro station are also two stops away. The square takes its name from Narymskaya Street, one of the oldest in Novosibirsk.

The green area covers approximately 7 hectares . It features numerous neat paths, comfortable benches, lanterns for evening strolls, and clear navigation. The trees include larch, spruce, pine, rowan, and fruit trees such as apple and pear. In summer, the alleys provide a pleasant coolness, and in winter, the park looks especially beautiful thanks to the coniferous plantings.

A bit of history

The modern history of Narymsky Square is linked to the construction of the Novosibirsk Circus: it was in the 1970s that the green area was developed as a public garden adjacent to the circus. There are also earlier versions of the site’s origins—from the remnants of a forest to a former grove that gradually became a recreation area.

In the 1970s and 1980s, harvest festivals and city events were held here, and later, public festivals and open-air concerts appeared. In the 1990s, the old pavilions were removed, and the square gradually acquired its familiar appearance as a promenade. In recent years, the area has continued to be renovated: new trees and shrubs are being planted, the pavement is being improved, and the stairways and flowerbeds are being maintained.

Fountain and "Cinema on the Grass"

One of the main attractions is the round fountain in the center of the square. During the warm season, it becomes a meeting place and a landmark for walking routes: families love to relax next to it, tourists take photos, and simply sit on the benches listening to the sound of the water.

In the summer, Narymsky Square comes alive in a special way: in the evenings, it hosts open-air screenings of “Cinema on the Grass.” Typically, audiences are shown classic films, cartoons, and shorts. The square also hosts musical performances, small fairs, lectures, and master classes.

Winter season: skating rink and ski track

In winter, the park doesn’t “sleep”: ski trails are laid out along the paths, and one of the areas is transformed into an ice rink. Music and lighting are turned on in the evenings, and New Year’s decorations are put up for the holidays. This is a great option for an active stroll in the city center without having to travel far.

Landmarks and monuments

Narymsky Square is interesting not only for its natural beauty, but also because several iconic landmarks can be seen here:

  • The Ascension Cathedral is the city’s main Orthodox church, located near the park. Its history dates back to 1913, and its current appearance was shaped by renovations in the second half of the 20th century.
  • The monument to Peter and Fevronia is a symbol of family values, love and fidelity.
  • The Monument to the Victims of Political Repression is a monument that recalls the tragic pages of the country’s history.
  • The monument to the victims of radiation disasters and nuclear weapons tests is a sign of remembrance for those who suffered and participated in the liquidation of the consequences.
  • Nearby is also the historic building of the city’s primary school from the early 20th century (an architectural highlight of the quarter), which is now connected to educational centers.

For families and active recreation

The square is popular for its versatility: it features a renovated playground, plenty of space for strollers, shaded benches, and quiet areas. Active visitors will appreciate the sports facilities and playgrounds, and cafes and snack bars are located nearby.
