The Cathedral of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky is one of the oldest and most iconic churches in Novosibirsk. It is the first stone religious building in the city and a monument in honor of the founder of the Trans-Siberian Railway, Emperor Alexander III. Its construction became an integral part of the development of Novonikolaevsk, the future Novosibirsk, as an important transport and spiritual center of Siberia.
History of the creation of the cathedral
At the end of the 19th century, against the backdrop of the construction of the Great Siberian Route, spiritual life began to form in the construction settlement by the Ob River. At first, a wooden prayer house was built with donations and consecrated in 1895. A few years later, local residents and government agencies initiated the construction of a stone church in memory of Alexander III and in honor of the patron saint of Rus’, Alexander Nevsky.
The church was built on a hill near the railway bridge so that its silhouette would be clearly visible from both the water and the railway. Architect Konstantin Lygin designed the church in the neo-Byzantine style, and engineer Nikolai Tikhomirov supervised the construction. The project received support at the highest level: Nicholas II donated a significant amount and also gave the church vestments and icons, including the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God of Athos style.
By 1899, the main construction work was completed, and on December 29 of the same year, the main altar was consecrated by Bishop Macarius. Later, the side chapels were consecrated in the name of St. Nicholas and the Great Martyr George the Victorious. The temple became one of the most majestic and rich along the entire Trans-Siberian Railway.

The Cathedral and the Development of the City
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral became the spiritual core of the rapidly developing city. By the beginning of the 20th century, educational institutions, hospitals, and social institutions were actively built in Novonikolaevsk, and later in Novosibirsk. The cathedral parish included important educational institutions: a real school, a girls’ gymnasium, a seminary, and schools. In 1915, the church received the status of a cathedral.
In terms of the number of parishioners and importance, the cathedral was comparable to the central churches of large cities. In 1912, more than 4,200 people confessed here. The cathedral became not just an architectural dominant, but also a spiritual support for thousands of city residents and travelers traveling along the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Loss and Rebirth
After the revolution, the church, like many religious institutions, had to endure hard times. The bells were removed, the bell tower was demolished, the paintings were painted over, and the interior was disfigured. The building was used for administrative and cultural purposes – first as a film archive, then as a philharmonic hall. Only in 1989 was the cathedral returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. A large-scale restoration began – the domes and bell tower were recreated, the paintings and interior were restored based on archival materials. In 1991, the church was re-consecrated by Patriarch Alexy II. The restored shrine once again became the center of the city’s spiritual life.

The shrine today
Today, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a functioning Orthodox church located in the very center of Novosibirsk, at the intersection of Krasny Prospekt and Sovetskaya Street. The relics of Alexander Nevsky, particles of the relics of the Kiev-Pechersk saints and relics of the imperial family are kept here.
The cathedral continues to attract not only believers, but also tourists: its architecture, history and spirit of the era do not leave anyone indifferent. The temple is included in the list of the main attractions of Novosibirsk and occupies a special place in the cultural and religious life of the city.
