Novosibirsk is a major cultural center of Siberia, home to a multitude of fascinating sights. For many years, the Novosibirsk State Circus has remained a favorite recreation spot for both residents and visitors. It’s a place where children and adults alike can laugh heartily, marvel, and immerse themselves in a truly festive atmosphere.
The history of the circus in Novosibirsk
The history of the Novosibirsk Circus began long before the construction of its current building. Back in the late 19th century, in 1899, the first circus booths appeared in the market squares of what was then Novonikolaevsk. Artists, acrobats, and wrestlers performed at public festivities, and spectators watched these unusual shows with interest.
In the early 20th century, the city’s circus scene flourished. Over the years, private circuses operated in Novonikolaevsk. Performances took place in wooden tent-like buildings, and the programs featured performances by famous circus artists of the time.
In 1931, the circus industry in the city came under state control. This marked the beginning of a new era in the history of the Novosibirsk Circus. For several decades, audiences were delighted by the summer circus tent, which was erected in the city each season.
It was only in 1971 that the circus received its own permanent building. It was then that the Novosibirsk State Circus, which still operates here today, was officially opened on Chelyuskintsev Street.

Architecture and features of the building
The circus building has become one of the city’s most interesting architectural landmarks. Its design was developed by architects Salomeya Gelfer and Georgy Napreenko from the Moscow Giproteatr Institute, together with designer V. Kornilov.
One of the building’s unusual features is its unique roof. Instead of a traditional dome, it uses a hyperbolic paraboloid-shaped structure. This design gives the building a modern and dynamic appearance.
The circus’s interior spaces are designed to maximize spectator comfort. The arena is located slightly closer to the performers’ entrance, allowing approximately 75% of the seats to have an excellent view. A well-thought-out system of passageways and circular galleries allows for easy movement around the auditorium and quick seating.
Originally, the auditorium was designed to seat approximately 2,300 people, but after modernization and the installation of more comfortable seating, the capacity has been reduced slightly to approximately 1,600, making attending the circus even more comfortable.

A world of amazing performances
Today, the Novosibirsk Circus is a true hub of vibrant emotions. Around 200 performances are held here each year, and the program is regularly updated. Typically, a new program appears every six weeks to two months.
In the circus arena, you can see:
- Aerial gymnasts performing complex tricks under the big top;
- dexterous acrobats and jugglers;
- cheerful clowns who make both children and adults laugh;
- virtuoso equestrians;
- bright animal shows;
and other exciting acts.
Sometimes, the arena can be transformed into a swimming pool or an ice rink, making the circus performances even more spectacular.
Over the decades, the Novosibirsk Circus has hosted renowned artists from around the world. Legends of Soviet and Russian circus art have appeared here on numerous occasions, and audiences have had the opportunity to experience unique shows that will long be remembered.

A place of joy for the whole family
A visit to the circus offers a unique atmosphere that can’t be replaced by any movie or screen show. Live performances, orchestral music, spotlights, and the audience’s genuine emotions create a truly festive atmosphere.
Many guests note that the Novosibirsk Circus pleasantly surprises with its atmosphere. It’s easy to spend several hours enjoying the vibrant acts, engaging stories, and artistry of the performers. Circus programs are especially popular with families with children—for young audiences, it’s pure magic.
